Startup Builds Entire Engineering Team From AI Agents

JustPaid, a Silicon Valley startup with nine employees, says it has replaced its human software engineering team with seven autonomous AI agents. The agents, built using the open-source AI tool OpenClaw and Anthropic's Claude Code, have reportedly delivered ten major features in just one month—a pace the company claims would have taken its human developers a year.

Vinay Pinnaka, cofounder and chief technology officer, told The Wall Street Journal that OpenClaw acts as the "brain that decides what needs to happen," while Claude Code serves as "the hands that do the coding work." The setup allows the AI to handle the entire development process, from planning to execution.

JustPaid, which offers an AI-powered platform for automating financial operations like billing and invoicing, has not disclosed how many human developers it previously employed. The company says it also hired an employee who was trained almost entirely by the AI agents, though the specifics of that training remain unclear.

Human Roles Shift, But Not Without Cost

With the AI agents churning out code, the remaining human employees focus on tasks like customer requests. Pinnaka, however, wants to automate that part of the job too. "Once [AI] gets to the stage where it is able to handle human empathy, I would be able to say, 'I can replace everyone with AI,'" he said.

The company's workforce is small—three cofounders and six other employees—so the AI agents nearly match the human headcount. While the claims could be seen as a marketing ploy to attract customers, they reflect a broader trend of software engineers embracing AI tools, often at the cost of burnout and security risks.

Recent incidents, such as the accidental exposure of sensitive data at Meta caused by a rogue AI agent, highlight the potential dangers of giving AI agents access to company operations.

The Price of AI-Driven Development

Running the AI agents is not cheap. Pinnaka said he initially spent $4,000 a week on Claude Code and OpenClaw, though he has since reduced the monthly cost to between $10,000 and $15,000. That sum would cover a competitive salary for a human engineer, especially in a tight job market.

Despite the cost, Pinnaka told the WSJ, "even if I'm spending the same amount of money on a Silicon Valley engineer versus AI, I'd still pick AI because it is able to work at a different scale."

The move raises questions about the future of software development jobs and the trade-offs of relying on AI for critical tasks. While JustPaid's claims are bold, they underscore the growing role of AI in the tech industry and the pressure on startups to innovate quickly.
