Dr. Alyssa Rhoden, a principal scientist at the Southwest Research Institute and co-author of the study, explained that data from NASA's Cassini mission revealed a 'curious libration' in Mimas' spin, a phenomenon often associated with geologically active bodies capable of supporting an internal ocean. This wobble, she noted, suggests that the moon's interior may not be solid but contains a layer of liquid water.
Mimas, known for its prominent Herschel crater that gives it a resemblance to the Death Star from Star Wars, has long been considered a frozen, inert world. The new hypothesis, however, proposes that beneath its heavily cratered surface, an ocean could exist, hidden from view. Rhoden described such worlds as 'stealth' ocean worlds, where the surface shows no obvious signs of the ocean below.
The research team, including Adeene Denton, a doctoral student at the University of Arizona who previously studied at Purdue, acknowledges that many questions remain. Denton noted that if Mimas does have an ocean today, the ice shell has likely been thinning since the formation of the Herschel crater, which could explain the absence of fractures on the moon's surface. 'If Mimas is an emerging ocean world, that places important constraints on the formation, evolution and habitability of all of the mid-sized moons of Saturn,' she said.
Implications for Habitability
The possibility of an ocean on Mimas adds to a growing list of moons in our solar system that may harbor liquid water, including Enceladus and Europa. While Mimas is small and seemingly unremarkable, the presence of an ocean would make it a target for future study in the search for life beyond Earth. Rhoden emphasized that other moons around Saturn and even Uranus could also support life, but more research is needed to answer these questions.
The findings are part of a broader effort to understand the potential habitability of icy moons, which have become a focus of planetary science. As scientists continue to analyze data from past missions and plan new ones, Mimas offers a unique case study of how an ocean can exist in the most unlikely of places.
