Plastic Debris Raises Coral Disease Risk to 89 Percent, Study Finds
Plastic waste is not just an eyesore on beaches; it is a direct threat to coral reefs, dramatically increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks. A study published in the journal Science found that when plastic comes into contact with corals, the probability of disease jumps from 4 percent to a staggering 89 percent. Researchers from Cornell University surveyed 159 reefs and found that more than a third were contaminated with plastic debris.
The findings add plastic pollution to the already long list of stressors facing these vital ecosystems, which are also grappling with the effects of climate change. “Corals are under threat from a long list of sources and climate change is one of the major and most publicized ones,” said Evan Fiorenza, a University of Washington graduate and co-author of the study, in an interview with Futurism. “Our study adds plastic waste to that ever growing list.”
Asia-Pacific Reefs Bear the Brunt
The research focused on the Asia-Pacific region, home to the majority of the world's coral reefs. The team estimated that approximately 11.1 billion plastic items are currently entangled in the region's reefs, a number projected to increase by an additional 40 percent by 2025. This region is critical not only for biodiversity but also for the livelihoods of millions who depend on reef-related fishing, tourism, and coastal protection, which together generate an estimated $375 billion annually in goods and services.
Plastic harms corals in multiple ways. Waste materials dumped on land can carry harmful pathogens out to sea. When scraps lodge in the reef, they often scratch the coral's surface, creating an entry point for pathogens, much like a cut on human skin can lead to infection. The stress caused by the presence of plastic also weakens corals' ability to fight off disease.
While climate change remains a formidable global challenge, plastic pollution offers a more immediate target for local action. “While coral reefs are presented with a lot of different threats, I think that addressing plastic pollution is one of the few things that local managers can actually mitigate,” said co-author Courtney S. Couch, a researcher at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, in an interview with Futurism. “Having everyone reduce their carbon emissions is absolutely necessary, but it’s really hard for local managers to influence our climate. This is one of those tangible things that marine resource managers can certainly work on.”
Coastal authorities worldwide are experimenting with innovative solutions to intercept plastic before it reaches the sea. For example, the United Kingdom recently deployed its first “Seabin” in Portsmouth harbor to collect oil, plastic, and other debris, while the city of Rotterdam has been using an aquatic drone known as the “waste shark.”
The authors emphasize that individual actions can collectively make a significant difference. “Little things we can do in our daily lives can have a huge impact when looked at collectively,” said co-author Lisa Kelly from James Cook University in Australia. “You might not think the straw in your drink is a big deal, but in reality, over 500 million straws are used daily in the U.S., so little things really add up.” Kelly suggests simple habits like carrying a reusable bag, using a travel mug, or keeping a water bottle handy to reduce plastic consumption.
While systemic change in the global packaging industry may be slow, the science is clear: reducing plastic waste can directly benefit coral health. As local managers and individuals take steps to curb plastic pollution, they are helping to protect one of the planet's most precious and biodiverse ecosystems.
