He advocates for reducing methane emissions through established methods and allowing the atmosphere to naturally oxidize the gas into CO2 over about a decade. Tans told Popular Science, “I propose that we decrease [methane] emissions in known ways, and let the atmosphere take care of its oxidation to CO2 in about 10 years.”

The debate highlights a broader tension in climate policy: whether to focus on cutting emissions at the source or to pursue technological interventions that may offer faster results but carry their own risks. While the Stanford proposal is still in its early conceptual stage, it has already sparked discussion among experts about the trade-offs involved.

For now, the idea remains a theoretical exercise, with no pilot projects or funding commitments announced. The scientific community is divided, with some seeing merit in exploring all options, while others caution that resources should be directed toward proven strategies like emission reductions and carbon capture technologies.
