The team validated their findings by cross-referencing the CO2 data with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) measurements—another byproduct of fossil fuel combustion—taken by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard NASA's Aura satellite. The strong correlation between the two datasets bolsters confidence in the new methodology.
